Enchantress

A Novel of Rav Hisda's Daughter

Ever been in love with more than one guy to the point where you couldn’t decide which one to marry so you chose both? Ever felt like you’ve been cursed? Are you interested in Torah? The main character Hisdadukh is and believes she has reason to. Journey with her if you care to and go on a magical journey to the far ends of Israel.

Enchantress is about the journey of one girl, whose main goal is to study the arts, do more than her law will allow her, and be happy.

This is the part I dreaded, giving my personal opinion and evaluation. This is where the truth comes out. I only read the first part of the book. I tried believe me I tried to read more, but the first part is all that held my interest. I want to disclose some things. First I am not Jewish, but I did try to study the Torah while in high school. So I was able to follow along and understood some of the things the characters were talking about. That being said the book is overwritten with religious intent to the point that by the time a non-Jewish reader gets to the second part of the book they may already be exhausted.

The book is also drawn out. It seems that things that could have been solved in 1-3 pages took twice as long to do so. There were also characters and parts of the book that were left in the book that seemed to have no purpose just extra dressing. At first one could be happy with the extra dressing till it is found out that it leads to nowhere and that just frustrates the reader. Maybe this book will be best with a person of Jewish heritage or Torah student who’s had more learning than I. Maybe they will like the book, but I didn’t.

Have you ever been interested in the Torah and the laws of the rabbi’s? Have you ever felt like you have been curse? If so Rav Hisda’s Daughter Enchantress maybe the book for you. If one were interested in the Torah and Jewish mythical battles one might enjoy this book. Word of advice, something I did not know before I chose this book to review is that enchantress is part of a series. This maybe of some interest to future readers as it may have helped me understand more and perhaps enjoy it if I had read the first installment.

Book Blurb for Enchantress

Fantastic tales of demons and the Evil Eye, magical incantations, and powerful attractions abound in Enchantress, a novel that weaves together Talmudic lore, ancient Jewish magic, and a timeless love story set in fourth-century Babylonia.

One of the most powerful practitioner of these mysterious arts is Rav Hisda’s daughter, whose innate awareness allows her to possess the skills men lack. With her husband, Rava--whose arcane knowledge of the secret Torah enables him to create a ?man” out of earth and to resurrect another rabbi from death--the two brave an evil sorceress, Ashmedai the Demon King, and even the Angel of Death in their quest to safeguard their people, even while putting their romance at risk.

The author of the acclaimed Rashi’s Daughters series and the award-winning Rav Hisda’s Daughter: Apprentice has conjured literary magic in the land where ?abracadabra” originated.  Based on five years of research and populated with characters from the Talmud, Enchantress brings a pivotal era of Jewish and Christian history to life from the perspective of a courageous and passionate woman.
