Once again, author BR Kingsolver has created a world that is rugged, violent, and vastly intriguing. As a fan of her Telepathic Clans series, I knew this would be a great read, and I was not wrong. Ms. Kingsolver tells a tale of a broken-down society, trying to rebuild itself despite its troubles. Libby Nelson is a highly intriguing character, as is Wil Wilberforce. These two are characters I certainly wouldn’t want on my bad side. The storyline has more twists and turns than a roller coaster, yet it’s easy to follow and hard to put down. I would recommend this novel to anyone seeking a wild and crazy walk on the dark side of life.
Libby Nelson is no stranger to the dark side of Toronto. From drugs, to prostitutes, and the Mob, Toronto has it all. Libby has walked all the streets, and knows all the secrets of this town. As a mutant who has the ability of a chameleon, she can get to places others would only dare to go. So when a corporate big wig shows up to hire her to track down the drug supplier to the city, she readily accepts. Little does she know what a hornet’s nest she would land in. With the help of Wilbur (aka Wil), Libby sets out on a journey that will threaten not only her life, but the lives of those she holds dear. And the trail leads them deeper and deeper into the shadows, the bodies are piling up, and each step only brings them closer to death.
Libby is a mutant, one of the top burglars and assassins in the world. For a price, she caters to executives’ secret desires. Eliminate your corporate rival? Deliver a priceless art masterpiece or necklace? Hack into another corporation’s network? Libby’s your girl.
Climate change met nuclear war, and humanity lost. The corporations stepped in, stripping governments of power. Civilization didn’t end, but it became less civilized. There are few rules as corporations jockey for position and control of assets and markets.
In the year 2200, the world has barely recovered the level of technology that existed before the ice melted and the subsequent wars. Corporate elites live in their walled estates and skyscraper apartments while the majority of humanity supplies their luxuries. On the bottom level, the mutants, the poor, and the criminals scramble every day just to survive.
