“Scorched” is a fantastic romantic suspense read by the talented Laura Griffin. This is a story that starts with a bang and never loses its momentum even as it delves into the emotional and poignant conundrum faced by those impacted by military service. An all too familiar scenario for those whose family and friends serve our country, Kelsey Quinn has dealt with the terror of waiting endlessly for that fateful notification about a loved one who is on a mission. Her desperation compels her to give an ultimatum to Navy SEAL Gage Brewer with results that neither is happy with. Unfortunately, the irony is that her own job endangers her and she must struggle to stay alive even as she becomes more entangled in a threat to her country and Gage finds that he has to stop and take a hard look at his life and goals. I enjoyed the nonstop action and the rising intensity of the investigation as clues are gradually revealed even as my heartstrings were tugged by the description of the emotional and mental sacrifices unstintingly provided both by those who serve and those who give them a reason to come home again. There are great subplots between strong secondary characters as well that make me hopeful that there will be further stories about a certain tenacious FBI agent and another SEAL warrior. An intense and mesmerizing read that will captivate you even as it makes you relieved that this is fiction.
