Redoubtable

Kris Longknife, #1

Kris Longknife:  Redoubtable  by Mike Shepherd brings back the injured princess and warrior as she attempts to deal with the combination of trying to provide humanitarian aid, fighting the pirate menace and tiptoeing around her nemeses the Greenfelds.  Pirates take the bait and attack the ship that Kris and her Marines are ready and willing to defend and they dispatch the enemies with their usual efficiency but this starts them on a series of events that could restart serious hostilities with the Greenfelds.  First, a tyrant has to be overthrown without adding to the significant loss of lives that is already occurring on the beleagured planet of Kaskatos which is suffering from overpopulation from refugees fleeing Greenfeld planets.  Kris must use her pet supersmart computer, Nelly as well as Nelly’s “kids” and the humans they are assigned to and find a way to work with her Peterwald counterpart, Victoria to root out the cause of the unrest on the various planets.  The threat of the mysterious aliens add even more variables to the conflicts and only by pooling all of their resources will the allies find a way to combat the pirate menace.

A rousing space opera that has extremely entertaining characters, both human and electronic.  A knowledge of the backstory would be helpful to those who are not familiar with the series because there are many undercurrents that affect the motivations of the major characters.  Nelly is a fascinating self-aware computer who has very strong maternal instincts for her “children”and is an essential weapon in Kris Longknife’s arsenal.  An enjoyable addition to the series.

Lieutenant Commander Kris Longknife has precise orders: seek out, engage, and destroy pirates, slavers, and drug lords operating beyond the rim of human space-without interfering in Peterwald family affairs. But when slavers kidnap a twelve-year-old girl, Kris's mission becomes personal. And if destroying the pirate compound flattens some Peterwald interests-well, to hell with politics.
