Kris Longknife, #10

The intriguing science fiction novels that comprise this very entertaining series never fail to be peopled with fascinating characters and wonderfully creative worlds. This author is adept at world-building and has a complex system in place that is always fun to visit BUT not a lot of progress took place in this book. Yes, Kris runs around and finally gets to have a tiny bit of fun and she displays her usual ingenuity at getting out of tough spots but ultimately this felt like an intermission. There is a wonderful surprise at the very end that will pave the way for many other interesting developments but some of the events that lead up to it are almost too coincidental and feel contrived, much like some fantasy series seem to rehash the same quest over and over again. I greatly enjoy this author’s ability to create an enthralling space opera but this was not my favorite of the series.

“Kris Longknife: Furious” continues the saga of Lieutenant Commander Kris Longknife who is inexplicably being punished for her role in destroying the inimicable aliens that she encountered during her exploratory trip. She has been isolated from most of her friends and allies and is wanted for her ‘crimes against humanity’ in multiple worlds across the galaxy. The discovery that several branches of her family seem to be participating in the vendetta against her prompts her to exhibit her typical proactive behavior and soon results in a series of events that will draw Kris out of her self-pitying wallow and enmesh those around her in another struggle that can be just as deadly and life-threatening but may result in her requiring a different set of skills to fight for her life.

Book Blurb for Furious

Having used unorthodox methods to save a world—and every sentient being on it—Lieutenant Commander Kris Longknife is wanted across the galaxy for crimes against humanity. For her own safety, she’s been assigned to a backwater planet where her Fast Patrol Squadron 127 enforces immigration control and smuggler interdiction. But Kris is a Longknife, and nothing can stop her from getting back to the center of things—not when all hell is breaking loose. Now she’s on the run, hunted by both military and civilian authorities—and since the civilian authorities happen to be her immediate family, Kris soon finds herself homeless, broke, and on trial for her life on an alien world…
