I've been waiting for this one! In the last book of the Return of the Highlander series the cynical Connor meets his match in the lovely Ilysa. With this last book Margaret Mallory has woven a story that will keep the readers spellbound.
Connor McDonald plans to use marriage to make a powerful alliance that will help him defeat his enemies. Ilysa knows that her love for Connor is in vain. She has nothing to offer. She has no powerful alliance or riches. She only has her humble self and her undying love for Connor. Beset by enemies, Connor decides it is time to look for a bride who will benefit his plans. Poor Ilysa is brokenhearted but determined to protect Connor from himself. She will use her visions to help the man she loves.
You never know how good you have it until it's gone. When Connor angrily reprimands Ilysa for locking him in his own dungeon to keep him safe she runs back home to Dunscaith Castle. She gets herself a makeover and starts preparing for a future without the man she loves. When Connor sees her again he is stunned by the change in her appearance. The turmoil heats up now that Connor has finally noticed the lovely Ilysa's beauty. He takes her back to his castle. Eventually they give into their desire and become lovers. Connor still plans on taking a wife who is well connected. Can he convince Ilysa to forsake her pride and remain in his bed? Shame on him! Connor's nemesis still plots against him and he is surrounded by traitors. Then Ilysa discovers a surprising connection that could prove to be the most powerful alliance of all.
Ms. Mallory has crafted an emotionally charged story for this stunning conclusion to her Return of the Highlander series. All of the lingering questions were answered in this last story. It was hard to say goodbye to this wonderful series. I've been hooked since the very first book, The Guardian. But it was Connor and Ilysa's story that was the most anticipated of all. From the beginning I just knew they belonged together. Their sweeping love story exceeded all my wildest expectations. Ms. Mallory is a master story teller. She gave her fans a climactic ending to an already stellar series.
For those of you who've yet to discover this series: You don't know what you're missing! So go forth...grab one of these spectacular books and immerse yourself into the world of these Highland warriors and the amazing women who dare to love them. One thing you won't be is disappointed. The Chieftain is a wonderful story from an amazingly talented author. I loved it!!! Margaret Mallory has done it again.
Connor, chieftain of the MacDonalds of Sleat, holds the fate of his people in his hands. Rival clans are plotting to take over his lands, and duty determines whom he will fight, trust . . . even marry. Seeking guidance, Connor turns to Ilysa, a young lass with the gift of foresight, who reveals an approaching danger-and a passion that burns only for him. But the warrior must make a powerful marriage alliance, and Ilysa's bloodline is far too humble.
With her powers to heal and see evil where others cannot, beautiful Ilysa dresses plainly, speaks softly, and loves her chieftain from afar. Yet when Connor finally stokes the embers of desire that have so long burned within her, Ilysa feels bliss unlike any she's ever known. Now as he is forced to place duty before happiness, Ilysa senses Connor is in grave peril. Can she find a way to prove she is the woman he needs by his side?
