"Retribution" is the second book in the Valentine Shepherd series. A few months have passed since the ending of the first book, Vengeance. We find out that Valentine and Max have broken up because of the devastating news that Valentine found out at the end of book one, and Max is engaged to someone else. Even though she still loves him, she’s miserable and tries to move on with her life as she investigates a new PI case where she must find a missing woman. While searching, devastating events happen that put Valentine on a road of revenge and destruction while still jugging with the aftershocks from the previous book.
I love this series! I was so happy to pick up the second book, and just like the first, it completely blew me away. I did find this book sort of a “filler book” but it was still awesome! It was very gritty and action-packed read. No boring parts or slow pacing. Everything was like an action movie, and I couldn't get enough.
My favorite thing about this book was the emotional ride. All the characters deal with some very heavy topics and issues, like sexual assault, abuse, addiction and suicidal tendencies. And through it all, I felt their pain and angst. I could feel the gritty layer of self-loathing, shame and unhappiness. And I felt the good stuff too, like the love, joy and contentment. Everything they went through, I could feel it in my heart and my soul. I connected with each and every emotion, and I loved it.
Also, I loved the relationship between Max and Valentine. We all know they're meant to be, and I could feel that sizzling chemistry between them. They’re soulmates. Point blank. And that could be felt whether they were apart or with new people. No one or nothing was coming between these too, and I loved it.
Overall, I loved this book and this series. It's so gritty, action-packed, and addicting and all the characters are complex and well-developed. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
V is for vengeance . . .
Private investigator Valentine Shepherd plays by one set of rules: hers. She's haunted by dark, cryptic visions of the future, not to mention an aching hole in her chest where her heart---and the love of her life, Max Carressa---used to be. But when Val's search for a missing woman leads to her own night of terror, the only thing on Val's mind is revenge.
In the months since Val walked away from their relationship, Max has tried to move on. Yet, when she asks for his help tracking down her attacker, he knows resistance is futile; he'll do anything for Val. Even sacrifice himself to save her.
