The Trouser Game

The Trouser Game is an enjoyable romp with plenty of clever banter between the hero and heroine. The premise of the story is fresh, with a New Woman heroine who has just returned to England from university studies in the United States. Unbeknownst to her family, she also switched institutions while stateside and ended up completing her studies at a co-ed college. She also ended up spending a night with fellow alumnus Bradley Townsend, who becomes so taken with Jillian that he follows her back to England. Unfortunately, upon her return, Jillian attempts to fit the expectations of her family and intends to marry her childhood crush, a very appropriate suitor named Miles. When Miles decides that he needs a more traditional wife and begins pursuing an aristocratic lady, Jillian reveals a hilarious talent for devising an endless list of derogatory names for the woman who turns her green with envy.

The attraction between Jillian and Bradley jumps off the page and their playful repartee is fun to read. At times, it is difficult to figure out why they aren't together. The conflict that keeps them apart is minor and seems to rely, for the most part, on Jillian repeatedly denying her attraction to Bradley, even as she gives into his continuous attempts at seduction. Though a freshly educated and feisty young woman, Jillian often has a frustratingly difficult time knowing her own mind.

Though it would have been a more enjoyable read if Jillian was not unsure of her own mind through most of the novel, it is still a pleasure to watch the playful cat and mouse dance that she and Bradley conduct throughout the story. Luckily, she is as determined in her pursuit of him when she finally realizes her love for him, even following him back to the states. Genella deGrey keeps the chase up right until the final page, but makes certain that Bradley and Jilli finally and deservedly find a happy ending to their trouser game.

Book Blurb for The Trouser Game

Newly edited version!

Sometimes, parlor games can lead to more than mere flirtation.

Jillian Kelley, a young woman on the brink of the new millennium, has just returned from university in the states. Her new knowledge of the world and its infinite possibilities facilitate a desire to disregard her mother’s old-fashioned Victorian parlor ideas of proper behavior.

As Jillian avidly pursues her girlhood crush—a traditional fellow countryman with wealth and property—a handsome American with whom she’d shared a passionate night comes to call. The insufferable intrusion is annoying to say the least, however his irresistible, seductive ways draw her cravings to the surface like the rise of a tide.

Bradley Townsend accepted with pleasure the bequeathed gift of Miss Kelley’s virtue the very night they met, but the adventurous blue-eyed beauty stole his heart, leaving him holding nothing but a note in the morning. There’s no way in Hell he’s going to let her slip through his fingers—even if he has to hop on a ship, follow her home and seduce her all over again.
