What should readers expect from you titles?
I’ve written 18 romances in nearly every genre: historical, fantasy, paranormal, contemporary and gay. Each romance varies in heat level from mild to super-spicy.
But no matter which book they pick up, readers can expect interesting plots, unique characters, and engaging romances that pull you into the story.
What's your writing process like?
Believe it or not, I write everything in longhand. When I get an idea for a story, I write my outline, let the ideas for the characters and plot marinate in my head for a while, and then go back and start writing on paper. After the first draft is complete, I type up the book. I add details and edit out parts I’m not crazy about as I go, so by the time I have a typed version it’s almost like a second draft.
My style is pretty loose – I don’t force myself to write a certain number of pages a day or between certain hours. I write when and where the mood strikes me. I aim to do at least one or two scenes (if not more) per sitting and work on the book at least once a day.
What's next for you as an author?
In addition to writing romances, I also write horror stories. I have a horror story coming out in the Moon Shadows anthology in October 2014. (Stay tuned to my blog and newsletter for links.)
This year I had two historical romances published in addition to A Secret Match. Wilderness Bride is a traditional romance set in the Michigan Territory in 1823. A young woman on the run impersonates a stranger’s mail order bride and goes off to live with him in his isolated mountain cabin. This full-length novel is a blend of tender romance and adventure.
Dangerous Indenture is a spicy historical with mystery elements set in Pennsylvania Colony. Shauna Farrow leaves Ireland to become an indentured servant to the strange Stewart family. She falls in love with her master’s roguish son, Ashton and together they try to solve the murder of a previous servant.
What is your favorite way to procrastinate?
My favorite way is to pick up a book and start reading! I’ve been known to say: “I’ll do (whatever) as soon as I finish this page (or chapter). Or if I’m not reading a really good book, I’ll go for a walk or watch TV.
If you could travel to another time, would you choose past or future or would you stick where you are at? And Why?
I’d travel back in time, but make sure I could come back to the present! There are a lot of places I’d like to visit: ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and Rome, a medieval European castle, castles in the UK, the Old West, and probably more. I like reading about different time periods – which is probably why I write a lot of historical romances.
Do you feel music has inspired your writing?
Yes, I’m always amazed how songwriters can convey a whole “story” in about 200 words and set it to music! I listen to music all the time. When I’m writing a book I have on instrumental or New Age music. When I’m typing up the manuscript, I put on loud rock music to motivate me (and make me type faster).
Music plays a big part in two of my romances, A Perfect Match and Trust with Hearts. In A Perfect Match, I used songs to convey the characters’ moods. The hero in Trust with Hearts is a country singer, so music is a central focus of his world.
Thanks for letting me visit! It was fun sharing my thoughts with readers. I invite everyone to visit my site to read excerpts, reviews, and summaries of all my romances. I welcome feedback from readers and you can contact me with questions, comments, or sign up for my newsletter.
