How would you view the world if you couldn’t see it? Most of us go through life never really appreciating the beauty of a sunset or sunrise, the various shades of green in a stand of trees or bushes, or maybe the vibrant colors of roses, petunias, and delphiniums.
What if you could only see lights and shadows? Or through the veil of fog? What if...Well I think you get the idea. My latest release, The Baker’s Touch, deals with a woman who owns and operates her family bakery, enjoys dancing and even has a decent love life. What makes her different? She’s blind.
Why did I chose to make a blind heroine? Life and people are imperfect, but that doesn’t mean one has to stop living. Being blind is one of those impairments most people don’t see, until they trip over a cane or service animal. :-) I also made my heroine blind, because there are not a lot of stories where the main characters have some sort of genetic disability.
Penelope, my heroine, can only see brief flashes of light. She has an inherited eye condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa and there’s no known cure. What I like about Penelope is that she didn’t let losing her sight stop her from achieving her dreams. She wanted a level of independence to run her own business and with some modifications and a seeing eye person, she’s able to do that.
Having no vision also requires a good support system, just like any other sighted person. Not only does Penelope have the support of her family, she also has two best friends who are willing to do whatever needs to be done.
So the next time you go out, take a moment to enjoy the view or better yet describe it to someone who can’t see it.
