What’s a guy to do when the woman he’s been longing for and waiting for finally starts to flirt and take notice of him? Well, if that guy is Derek Lane, he winds her up with some heavy petting and some good loving while convincing her that he’s a safe bet for the future. Vanessa Bingham is the widow of Derek’s best friend. Over the years, since his friend died Derek has been there for Vanessa without putting any pressure on her or trying to seduce her. Now though, Vanessa seems like she’s ready to move on, but it also seems like she’s only looking at short-term and Derek doesn’t want to be just friends with benefits. He wants forever after.
This book is a lovely story, filled with some intrigue and an interesting plot. While Vanessa is finally ready to move on, someone else has been watching and is not thrilled with idea of Vanessa and Derek together. As Derek and Vanessa begin to grow closer she learns that she has a stalker, and the stalker is starting to up the stakes. Derek’s secrets are compelling and as the reader learns more about him they will be surprised by what is revealed.
Derek is such a lovable hero, described as a gentle man with secrets of his own, he just quietly loves Vanessa. His day job as a research librarian along with taking care of his farm animals keeps him quite busy. With glimpses of a The Princess Bride movie, which is a favorite of Derek and Vanessa, we see a plot begin to emerge reminiscent of Wesley and Buttercup. The story is not ordinary, and several aspects make it even more riveting such as the parallels between Derek’s quiet pursuit of Vanessa and Wesley’s quiet pursuit of Buttercup. This sensual story is beautiful and romantic, and although not a long novel it is a satisfying read.
