A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Terri

Sara works in heaven’s library as an archivist. She enjoys her job but every know and then she bend the rules and goes after some books to copy before their time. As long as she doesn’t get caught, she’s okay. If she’s caught, she’ll be sent to the most boring job in heaven. Currently, she has her eye on a manuscript that might have the cure for a bone infection that a little boy has. She’s been searching for the cure for a while so the thought of popping into an Australian drug lord’s house and borrowing it, doesn’t scare her. She should be in and out with no one the wiser. That is until she’s caught by Filip.

Filip is djinni and under the control of the drug lord. His task is to keep everything that the drug lord owns safe and that includes his books being taken by pretty angels. Even though Filip knows that he can’t keep Sara if she calls upon heavenly forces, he takes her to his boss.

Sara could call heavenly forces to get free but that would also get her in trouble. Besides, she finds herself attracted to his handsome djinni! Filip tries to get Sara to head back to heaven when the drug lord orders Filip to take Sara to rescue his daughter, Jay who has been kidnapped. Though both Sara and Filip agree that rescuing Jay is important, they seem to get sidetracked in a most interesting way.

With Filip bonded to his bottle and Sara living in heaven, is there any way that they will have the opportunity to explore their feelings? Can they rescue Jay without anyone getting killed or is that just a dream too?

This story has some definite twists that are unique.

There are three types of “magical” or supernatural creatures: angels, djinni and demons. Djinni are part demon so traps meant to capture demons can work on djinni. There are also a finite number of djinni that King Solomon cursed and only one has ever been released from the curse. That doesn’t give Sara and Filip much hope to be together.

Though Sara isn’t a Guardian Angel, she has powers of her own as do all angels. She is always looking for the good in people while Filip just sees what is obvious. This makes for a problem when Sara sees redeeming qualities in the kidnapper and Filip just wants to kill him. Each also has other powers such as being able to teleport from one place to another.

I truly liked the premise to this story and the characters. They were both well thought out. However, I’m not sure if it is because the story is so short or what but it didn’t feel complete. It was if this were still a work in progress and with a little more fleshing out, it would be an awesome story. Yet, there is still enough excellent bones that the story is entertaining and enjoyable.

I’ve never read Ms Schwartz before but she apparently has an excellent imagination that can take readers in directions not previously thought of. This aspect of her writing alone will have me looking for more of her work. Angel Thief is a feel good book with redeeming features in even the bad guys which doesn’t give you too many people to boo in this story. Don’t you hate it when everyone comes out good? Still there is no preachy stuff or lots of references to God which is amazing as there are plenty of angels. For anyone wanting or needing a change of pace, this short story will keep you well entertained for a few hours and have you wondering what angels are really like.

Book Blurb for Angel Thief

She's breaking the rules. Again.

An archivist in the heavenly library, Sara must follow protocol when it comes to curating the knowledge of the universe. But "liberating" an ancient text from the collection of a human—an Australian drug lord—could save a boy's life. Sara has no way of knowing that one of the man's other treasures is a sexy-as-sin djinni, bound by a wish to guard the estate.

He's only following orders.

Filip is compelled to turn over intruders, even celestial ones, to his master. When he catches Sara in the library, he isn't above indulging in some sensual kisses with her, or using her to trick the mobster into wasting a wish. It's what he must do to preserve his facade of freedom and protect his heart.

But the kidnapping of the drug lord's daughter forces Sara and Filip to work together—bringing out the hero that lurks within the soul of the djinni, and the passion within the angel.
