A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Sapphire

ARTEMIS RISING takes readers on a journey with young Eva. She was raised Catholic by her abusive father, but chose to follow in her pagan mother's footsteps. Soon her beloved mother and horrid father are killed on a shipwreck. Eva must find her path without her mother to guide her. However, as the story continues young Eva must discover which goddess she really is and who she is meant to be with. Is she Arethusa or Isolde? Is she meant to be with Alpheus or Tristan?

The mythology and legend in ARTEMIS RISING is interesting and well developed. I enjoyed reading about people and places often not explored by other authors. The past setting explored in this novel in illustrated very poetically and many literary elements such as allegory are used. At times I found the characters one dimensional. Eva a bit dull, the one portrayed as Alpheus a bit too cruel, etc. However, the book was full of promise and mythology readers who want to dig a little deeper into their reading are certain to enjoy it.

Book Blurb for Artemis Rising

Torn between her father's Catholicism and her mother's Pagan beliefs, Eva finally chooses Paganism. She accepts the name of Arethusa but learns too late that her life will mirror the Greek nymph's tragic fate. When they sail to the Azores Islands, her mother tells her that her destiny rests with Diogo, the shipowner's son. But Eva sees a vision of another . . .

When the ship founders off the Azores, Tristan, a young Azorean, saves her. Destined to be with Diogo yet aching for Tristan's forbidden love, Eva must somehow choose between them, or fate will soon choose for her.

Artemis Rising is a beautiful, seamless blend of two mythologies: the Arthurian legend of Tristan and Isolde, and the ancient Greek myth of Alpheus and Arethusa. It is a story filled with young romance, tragedy, forgiveness and attempts at redemption.
