This is old school futuristic romance at its finest. Wow, this took me back to the eighties where aliens of other worlds had alien attributes, different cultures and different languages. A hero in the galactic forces tugged between duty and what his heart tells him. A heroine that steps beyond what she knows in her world to reach out for what she wants despite her fear. I'll admit to some nerves when I initially started this story feeling it was going to be heavy on the Sci Fi aspect and light on the romance and connection between the characters. Boy was I wrong. After the rocky first couple of paragraphs where I was trying to figure out where we were going, I soon found myself sinking into a really great novel. Though shorter than what I would have preferred Erica Anderson does an amazing job telling the story of military office Rakosy Avar on a diplomatic mission to Antares where he meets and is gifted with a "concubine" style alien female.
Meraya is unsure how to handle the strange feelings she has when she is sent to service the human male. The women of the race have been curious about them since their first visits. Not wanting to give too much away I'll stop there because political intrigue and betrayal abound in this fantastic tale. There is great HEA that will make you sigh. I truly hope Anderson gives us more of this. Especially Avar's partner who seems an interesting character to explore. Longer novels and more, more, and more Ms. Anderson, please.
