A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: ELF

Oo-rah!  Torin Kerr may have left the Corps to join her beloved Craig Ryder but she is not going to be content to simply eke out a living as a Civilian Salvage Operator. Just because she has resigned from the Marines doesn’t mean that she has lost all of the skills she has honed as a gunnery sergeant and the facets of her character that made her such an effective NCO allow her to adapt herself to the new role that she has taken on.  The unwelcome discovery that well-camouflaged aliens had orchestrated the ongoing war and caused the loss of countless numbers of lives has caused Torin to re-evaluate her priorities and Craig has moved to the top of her list.  They are just beginning to integrate her into his way of life when tragedy strikes in the form of ruthless pirates who kidnap him and leave her for dead, drifting in space with a leaking suit.  Fortunately for them both, Torin is notoriously hard to kill and still has connections to call upon, including the irritating but resourceful reporter Presit a Tur durValintrisy.   Aided by a trio of her former Marines, Torin sets out to retrieve her abducted lover and if she has to bash in a few heads and re-establish her bonafides as a force to be reckoned with, so be it.

The Truth of Valor  by Tanya Huff continues the saga of larger than life Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr in fine fashion.  Having been really disappointed by the ending of Valor’s Trial, I was delighted to discover that Torin’s resignation from the Marines did not mean that her universe was going to disapear again.  Even though I enjoy Ms. Huff’s vampire books and hope that she will continue writing sequels to her other series, the Torin Kerr books are my favorite novels in this genre.  Ms. Huff seamlessly populates her universe with a fascinating melange of species, each with their characteristic quirks, interesting weaknesses and identifiable motivators that allow them to be alien yet familiar.  The “Valor” series is not just space opera at its finest, it provides a roller-coaster adventure ride that reminds us that positive attributes such as love, honor and integrity are universal concepts.   Make sure that you have a sufficient block of uninterrupted time to read this because once you pick it up you are not going to want to put it down!
