Suzanne Hart, owner and operator of Donut Hearts coffee shop in April Springs, North Carolina, has her hands full running her shop. Since she works crazy hours, she doesn’t have much time for a fun and active social life. She wraps her time around the coffee shop and enjoys what she does. That is until one morning, during the wee hours, when she walks into her shop to make the donuts, a car speeds past her shop and suddenly a body is thrown from the speeding car. The body lands directly in front of her door and she can’t believe what she has just witnessed. Since it’s dark out and the driver is wearing all black, Suzanne can’t make out who the driver even is. Before she knows it, her shop is now part of the crime scene.
Ironically now, everyone in town stops by to grab a cup a coffee, a donut and lots of gossip. Everyone is considered a suspect in the small town of April Springs and the sheriff opens a full fledge investigation. But it seems that not enough information is being presented to the cops so Suzanne enlists the help of her best friend, Grace Gauge, to find out some dirt for themselves.
Is it the cops that solve the murder mystery or does Suzanne and Grace beat them to it? Who did the murder victim turn out to be and who killed him? Why was he murdered in the first place? Why was poor Suzanne’s shop the target chosen to drop the body?
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this murder mystery! I loved the idea of it being wrapped around a donut shop and that the author included recipes for her readers to try. Ms. Beck is a talented author and I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel to this Donut Shop Mystery, Fatally Frosted. The characters were well rounded, the plot was enjoyable and the ending was a perfect fit for this story. I would highly recommend this book to all readers even if you normally don’t read mysteries. Ms. Beck has made me a murder mystery fan now! I assure you that you won’t be disappointed picking this one up and adding it to your library!
