A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Diana Coyle

Kelly Baron is a woman who is harboring a deep secret that no one knows. Since leaving her hometown of Landam, Indiana twenty years ago because her parents couldn’t deal with the fact that she was pregnant and unwed, Kelly has made the best of what she had in life. Thankfully her Aunt Bess took her in and allowed her to raise the baby in her home. When Colleen was born, Aunt Bess helped Kelly to raise her bundle of joy.

Now life around Kelly seems to be changing drastically for her. Her daughter is all grown up and married now and her mother, Grace, seems to need assistance packing her things up because she’s moving out of the house Kelly grew up in. The funny part is Kelly thinks her mom is moving into a retirement community. When she finally gives in and promises to help her mother pack up the house, she dreads having to go back to the same hometown that made her feel unwelcomed when she became pregnant. She figures that as soon as she finishes helping her mom, she’s going to take some deserved time to travel to find herself now that her daughter has just married.

Arriving in Landam seems to stir up some old feelings for Kelly. Especially when she sees Rob Scott, the boy she used to secretly date back in high school. But she promises herself that she won’t be in town long enough to spend time with him even though he’s grown up to be the handsomest man she’s laid eyes on in a very long time. But Rob turns out to be the last of her worries when she finds out the real reason Grace called her home to help her pack. It seems her mom is getting married to Rob’s father, Howard. How can fate be playing this cruel joke on her?

Between helping her mom pack up a house that’s been lived in for so many years, the nervous bride wanting to exorcise the last of her own demons with Kelly before starting a new life with Howard, Rob wanting to get to know the adult side to Kelly and a daughter who just doesn’t understand why her mother won’t tell her who her father is – Kelly is stressed beyond comprehension. Can she find the peace she’s been looking for by returning to the place that started all this turmoil in the first place? Does she still have feelings for Rob after all these years? Does Grace and Howard’s wedding go off without a hitch? And does Colleen finally find out who her father is after all these years have passed?

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and felt that I was watching it unfold in front of me as if I was another character in the story. Ms. Scarbrough knows how to tell a story and she takes her readers on a thrilling roller coaster ride as they turn the pages. I loved Kelly and wanted her to finally find the peace that she so deserved after all these years have passed. I fell in love with Rob immediately because it was obvious that, no matter how many years have passed that he didn’t see Kelly, he still cared deeply for her. I wanted them to hook back up and start a new life for themselves. A life filled with genuine love for one another – something they hadn’t seemed to have found with the other partners they’ve had in their lives. If you are in the market for a feel good story that just warms your heart and puts a smile on your face, then look no further. This is one story you should definitely look into!
