There are a few conflicts in the Heart of the Wolf; Volen the gray wolf leader wants Bella for his mate; Bella wants to find the women killer - a red wolf; a zookeeper wants wolves; three red wolves want Bella for mate; Devlyn, a gray wolf, and Bella, a red wolf, mate so now he has to fight for her. Put into the mix a nosy neighbor and you get a foreword on a formidable plot. Terry Spear guides you through the action packed story with clear consecutive events. Everything centers on Bella whose time is right for accepting a lifetime mate. She's moved to the Portland Oregon area away from her gray wolf home to get away from Volen. She has a cabin in the woods and as she's running as a red wolf gets tranquilized and taken to a zoo for exhibition. News tells of a red wolf and out come the suitors. Escaping from the caging she ends up as a person in a hospital, and escapes from there with Devlyn. Then, Devlyn and Bella search for the women killers, mate, and try to fight off the others that want Bella for themselves. The dialogue has a naturalness of manner. The suspense is clever. The settings are territorial enlisting another facet in the drama. The erotic scenes are hot and in human form. Heart of the Wolf is a wonderfully written fast paced dramatic and erotic romance of a vigilant Bella - a red wolf werewolf - in modern day society. Special Notes: Terry Spear used the death phrase, a pregnant pause, when describing something other than a 9-month wait. At least I hope in this case it wasn't a nine month hesitation. There are so many preferable adjectives why place a giving birth, months and months of discomforting description to a "pause"? I so dislike this phrase it takes a conscious effort to continue a story, so I gave this story a 4.75 rating rather than a 5.
