Older than your average Probie, Brett Hunter has been around the block a time or two as a private investigator. Now on the Force, he's partnered with Sam Taylor due to his background. Sam is a detective with a low tolerance for incompetence and she really doesn't want a partner, but on the first day Brett proves his worth. Stubborn but not stupid Sam accepts the situation. But can she accept her growing feelings for her subordinate? Brett is loving his new job and his partner isn't too hard to look at either. Telling everyone he doesn't notice she's a beautiful woman isn't working though, and when she goes on a date with his cousin he sees red. How to get past the stigma of boss/subordinate? And can he and Sam make a relationship work while tracking a serial killer and dealing with Brett's family drama? I love the Hunter family and this is a winner to add to the collection. Brett and Sam are the focus, but in the background is all the drama, mystery and magic that makes this series such an attention grabber. Family nemesis Sebastian Antonelli is back and brings with him some major shockers. The bombs dropped in this transitional story pave the way for at least three more future stories. The tension between Sam and Brett was subtle at first, and I had to reread the teaser thinking maybe the cousin was the love interest. But no, eventually Sam and Brett connected and they did so with a bang. Loved the final breakthrough that brought them together. Warning for new readers, if you haven't read the Hunter series you will struggle. This is definitely not a standalone read. But once you get started you won't want to stop, and the bombs the author comes up with never cease to amaze. Unusual Circumstances is not to be missed to answer some nagging questions from previous books in this series and to revisit the previous romantic interests and see how they are faring.
