Indians were considered second class citizens. Half-breeds? Even worse. Sarah has been on the receiving end of derision and ridicule all her life. Through no fault of her own she had an Indian father and is the result of her mother's love for an Indian and subsequent affair. Her mothers husband has never forgiven her for it and when her mother dies Sarah knows her days are numbered. Will her father give her to the first man who asks? Will Jed, her brother's friend, even ask? After overhearing a plot to harm the two men at her family farm buying horses, Sarah determines she must warn them. And so begins her new life. As she sees something she never imagined but can't help watch. And wish she was in the middle. Being caught with his pants down is what Jackson Kellar deserves. Made to marry the girl who caught him? Well, it could be worse. In a time when morals would result in his and his lover Nate's lynching for expressing their love for one another, he's grateful Sarah is silent and her reward is marriage to him and being removed from the "home" she lives in. He's a half-breed too so it's a good start. He'll do right by her and turn his back on his physical love for Nate. Easier said than done. And what about Nate's feelings? Like a relationship isn't hard enough without all the added constraints of secrecy, morality and ignorance. It's a wonder anyone got anything done. Innocent but not. That's how I think of Sarah McLeod. With an innate sensuality inherited from her parents, Nate and Jack do not disgust her. She's envious. She sees the love and wants to be part of it. And that's the opening that makes this unorthodox relationship work. While Jack and Nate are both obviously bisexual, they have guilt over their desire for Sarah since it's like cheating on one another. Together since childhood they have always been a pair and learning to add a third is painful. Very sexual at times, and others not. Dealing with the morality of the 1800s added to the suspense, and the impetus that kept the story moving was the developing relationship. Complete with an epilogue (which I personally always enjoy) this was a story not to be missed.
