A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Chris
Lexi Hunter is good at what she does. She works in the witness protection program and is one of the top agents. When she gets her newest assignment, she figures business as usual. Until circumstances surrounding the case make it necessary for her to go into the program. Now sitting on top of the fence instead of on one definite side, she's connecting with her witness, Gabriel, in ways she never has before. The circumstances are different and may be affecting her, but it is definitely the man who sets her on fire. How can she do this and not sacrifice all she is? Gabriel Elliott isn't good or bad. He's both. And while he works for people of ill-repute, he does have values and morals that he upholds and follows. When the man who took him in is murdered in front of him, he vows to do whatever is needed to bring down those responsible. Even side with the law. What he didn't count on was Lexi. How can a woman with such conviction about right and wrong ever fall for a guy like him? Wendy Stone is one of my favorite authors and her Hunter series holds a special place in my reading collection. But this one just didn't do it for me. I had a hard time connecting with Lexi as a woman in love and an even harder time reconciling Gabe's persona with how he was described at the start of the story. Usually the author can ease my impressions and shift my thinking but we just weren't connecting this time. The story was good, and I enjoyed it like I always do. But it didn't grab me and refuse to let go. The romance between Gabe and Lexi didn't "just happen" like they usually do for me when I read a story by this author. It seemed unrealistic. Gabe's character started out as harsh and bad, and then he's mushy and needy. Didn't fit. And the hot and cold attitude by both suddenly morphing into love didn't sit right. I do recommend reading this because this author always pens a good story with lots of romance and steamy sex. I was just hoping for great.

Who would have thought that the witness protection program The witness protection program has strict rules about romance, especially a romance between the top agent and one of her witnesses, but that didn't seem to stop Alexandra Hunter. She'd never met a man like Gabriel Elliott. Can they find a way to bend those rules? Can Lexi give in to the feelings that Gabe inspires so easily? Will they be able to have their own happily ever after?could spark a romance?
