A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Chris

While their engagement is no love match, Sophia is hurt that her fiancé would rather save his family’s heirloom engagement ring on her finger rather than her. In a fit of pique, she defiantly goes with the strangely attractive highwayman. Her choice seems to be the correct one when her long suppressed desires are quickly addressed and satisfied by Bad Jack, her captor. Her savior?

Jack is engaged to marry a wealthy woman he has never met from Germany. In a last hurrah, he decides to conclude his erotic correspondence with a woman he met at a masque ball a year ago with a weekend fulfilling all her fantasies that she has described in her letters. His paramour for the weekend is not as he remembered, but she was masked and it was dark. And who knew she was such a good actress? But all her denials mean naught when her passion shows she is his equal in the bedroom. Loathe to let her go at the end of their tryst, his error is shown to him by the woman he was supposed to abduct. Now feeling scorned and cheated, she sets out to ruin both Jack and Sophia’s lives. How close will she get to succeeding?

What a fun read! Sophia was a delight as she discovered what she had dreamed about. A sensual creature, she embraced her situation rather than reveal herself. Although she was resistant at first, Jack quickly relieved her of any thoughts of pursuing that. While Jack was jaded and bored as rakes were, he was quickly captured by Sophia’s joy and vitality as well as her sensuous nature.

What I didn’t particularly care for was Jack’s willingness to let things be rather than pursue what was obviously true love. I realize aristocrats didn’t marry for love, and Sophia and Jack discussed this. The angst and pain that Sophia suffered was great for the storyline, and made the ending more touching, but Jack kind of lost some luster for me. He makes up for it in the end, but Sophia was the real hero of the story. All in all, a wonderful read.

Book Blurb for Badcock

When her fiancé trades her for an heirloom ring to a dashing highwayman who holds up their coach on a desolate country road, Sophia Astley is hurt and shocked. However, it soon becomes strikingly apparent to Sophia that she is the true gem Bad Jack sought. Intrigued, she willingly submits to every tantalizing taboo he metes out to her.

Dressed as a masked highwayman, Jack Badcock, Earl of Stafford, thinks he is acting out the fantasies of a woman he knows only through lurid letters. As Jack tames her with blindfolds, sensual spankings and an array of torrid toys, she plays her role as the abducted, submissive virgin convincingly—too convincingly. By the time Jack uncovers his fantasy lover’s true identity, it’s far, far too late.
