A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Angi
Lilly Brooke, Piers Michaelmas, Gary Boyle and Helen Gray survived 5 years of being held hostage together in Spain. They make a vow to always look after each other. A vow that has long lasting and sometimes very personal consequences. But the world they are returned to is a world changing drastically and rapidly. The sea levels are rising, with no concrete reason why. Flooding is occurring all over the world. As the sea levels continue to rise the four former hostages face their own personal challenges in dealing with it. As high ground becomes more and more scarce decisions must be made, some of them extremely difficult.
This book was an interesting read for the most part. The plot was well thought out and easy to follow. The characters didn’t do much for me; most of them came off as cold-hearted and soulless most of the time. Concerned only with their own survival. Many of us would probably react the same way I’m sure, but to see so few of the other types focused on, was a little disheartening.
The biggest issue I had with this work though was the pacing. The first third of the book was extremely slow and difficult to get through. I felt more like I was reading some doctoral dissertation or thesis than a novel. I wanted to skim over all the details provided in this book, but was afraid if I did that I would miss something important amongst all the little stuff. I didn’t really start getting into the book until about half way through the book.
The concept was very intriguing even if I did have to force myself to get to the “good” stuff in this work. If you’re a lots and lots of detail kind of person you’ll really enjoy this work. If you’re not it’s going to take some work to get past the first third to a better pacing and a little bit fewer details. Either way, it ends up being a relatively enjoyable read.
